In 1970's my deaf school was oral. I was forced to wear hearing aids like you did. Lots of headaches and confusions.
When the school changed into T/C, I was allowed to stop wearing hearing aids in 3rd grade. When I was in High School, I became curious to hear the music, etc.. My parents got me the hearing aid and I tried, tried, tried to get used hearing. However, I continued having headaches. My hearing aid remained in my drawer for many years. Then, I gave it to my friend. She wore it for about ten yrs. Some of us will never feel comfortable with hearing aids, while others enjoy it.
Glad you got your freedom in your last 2 yrs. No, it's not legal for the audiololigst to flunk all your academic courses based on your refusal.

It is not about your hearing aids issue. It is about the audiologist's power -- to control you and your life. Glad your principal finally was on your side.

I completely understood your experience! I have been there in mainstreamed program with large # of deaf/hoh students. I finally stop wearing hearing aids when I started HS. Hate those hearing aids especially when you dont understand the sounds is. Thanks for sharing

Intersting in USA anyway In Canada as our province as 1973 ish We fought against hearing aid then few days later they removed the regulation of hearing aid so We were free without it to date. I think They can't force all DEAF/HOH to use Hearing aid or Colhear implant as well. DEAF/HOH have a right to say no or yes and They think we are rat but no way We are happy without them and Show how to pride to be DEAF/HOH

Don't Afraid of Hearing Power!!!!

You made me remind of my experience when I was little girl...Around in year of 1975. Same situation in my school where I live in other country. The audiologist came to see me and asked me if I was still wearing the hearing aid. I did sometimes to hide in my backpack, left at home, or left in locker.. or turn off the sounds. I was also complained my headache, too. In few years later, I finally got free from hearing aid.. no more sounds. So I felt so good because I am fully 100 % DEAF, too..

No one can force to wear your hearing aid. Either you or your parents made the choice.

hi Deaf Dixie, I don't think I've welcomed you in deafread yet... welcome!! :)

Whoa, that audiologist is taking things way too personally, the way she reacts to you for not wearing hearing aids. She's using manipulation and fear to make you wear hearing aids by threatening you with an F in all you academic subjects. She should be ashamed of herself. She should've discussed with you why you don't want to wear hearing aids, and respect your decision.

I'm glad that your mother and principal understood and respected how you felt. Wow, that must've been a liberating moment when your principal stomped your hearing aids! :)

I remember being forced to wear my hearing aids in primary school, and sometimes in high school... when I changed schools, it was a crowded mainstream school with a visiting teacher once a week, so I didn't bother wearing my hearing aids. It always gave me tinnitus.

Some children do enjoy wearing hearing aids... but we shouldn't force those who don't. It's not right. Thanks for sharing :)
