Good Topic!

I can see why Marlee is struggle to be indentification.

Often Hearing people don't understand between late deafness and profound deaf. Be yourself as you can tell you own identification.

Tell a truth if you are not oralism.. Can you read my lipread.. I say no not whole.. Write and Pen. It is being honesty with people.

I dont blame Marlee go through so confusion.

Well, I don't speak for Matlin here, but I bet she identifies herself as "Marlee Matlin". I don't think she is confused at all.

Why should people identify themselves by labels? Sure people could call me an ASL using deaf person, but I prefer to identify myself as "J.J.".

Just my 2 cents...

i think she tries to stretch her identity a bit to appeal to all kinds of fans. i am not so sure of her background. i think she went to a deaf program in chicago area. i am not sure when she learned signing. guess you need to research. anyway i rather go see Marlee than Ms Whitemore. I dont think Ms Whitemore signs well.

Hands Waving, Dixie!

In my opinion, I don't think she's confused. I think she's a completed person. She can speak in both languages: Sign language and spoken language.

But I'm so glad you discussed, you did great! It gave us something to think about.

Hands waving, Deb Ann ;)

Interesting topic to discuss.

Marlee Matlin is not confused who she is, rememner she is an actress, she can change her identity whenever she wants or being told. I have been seeing her repeating saying on how much of hearing loss she has... "STONED DEAF". She is an uniqueness person that inspire everyone with all level of deafnesses.

Identity creates discrimination. Be who you are is what they love to be with. Saying WHO are you WHAT are you would make them feel inferior, don't they? Greet them and feel welcomed makes the world a better place.
Be thankful that Marlee Matlin won the award and done lot of shows that many do not. Or do we want to continue toying with Crab Theory?
Having a Crab Theory to our community wouldn't make us any better for the world to see.

Marlee Matlin is a movie star, and make anything possible to earn. I'm sure that she knew her ID as being deaf. Since "Dancing With the Stars" proved that she was little behind by Samba, and Mambo music to her dancing. She didn't do well twice, very hard for her to follow musics, but her dancing did well on all of three before elimination.
